Clinton’s Support from Oil and Gas Industry Lobbyists

NEW YORK – Bernie Sanders’ campaign spokesman Michael Briggs issued the following statement on Thursday after Hillary Clinton said she was “sick of the Sanders’ campaign lying about” contributions she received from the fossil fuel industry: “The truth is that Secretary Clinton has relied heavily on funds from lobbyists working for the oil, gas and coal industry. According to an analysis by Greenpeace, Hillary Clinton’s campaign and her super PAC have received more than $4.5 million from the fossil fuel industry. In fact, 57 oil, gas and coal industry lobbyists have directly contributed to Clinton’s campaign, with 43 of them …

Global Warming’s Terrifying New Chemistry

(Excerpt): The methane story is utterly at odds with what we’ve been telling ourselves, not to mention what we’ve been telling the rest of the planet. It undercuts the promises we made at the climate talks in Paris. It’s a disaster—and one that seems set to spread. The Obama administration, to its credit, seems to be waking up to the problem. Over the winter, the EPA began to revise its methane calculations, and in early March, the United States reached an agreement with Canada to begin the arduous task of stanching some of the leaks from all that new gas …

Job-Killing Trade Deals Hurt Pennsylvania Workers

PITTSBURGH – Flanked by local labor leaders and Pennsylvania workers, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday said trade deals he opposed and Hillary Clinton supported have devastated Pennsylvania manufacturing and hurt working families. “Over the last 35 years, our trade agreements have been rigged by corporate America to shut down manufacturing plants in Vermont, in Pennsylvania and throughout this county,” Sanders said. The result, he added, has been that Pennsylvania workers lost jobs that went to Mexico, China and other low-wage countries. “On this issue,” he added, “Secretary Hillary Clinton and I have very strong differences of opinion going way, …

Sanders’ People-Powered Campaign Aims for Another Record Month

PITTSBURGH – Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign on Thursday announced it is aiming to surpass last month’s fundraising record of $43.5 million. Sanders has now received 6.2 million individual contributions from more than 2 million donors since the campaign began last year. “Our campaign is building the momentum we need to win the nomination and beat the Republicans in November,” said Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager. “More and more people are joining Bernie’s political revolution every day and we’re hopeful our supporters will help us reach another big goal for the month of March.” Sanders’ campaign has so far raised more …

The Disappearance of Hillary Clinton’s Healthcare Platform

In an extraordinary magic trick, performed on a national scale, Hillary Clinton’s healthcare platform has been disappeared. While policy analysts, news anchors, and columnists have been engaged in an intense debate over Bernie Sanders’s “Medicare for All” proposal, Clinton’s incremental alternative has escaped almost all scrutiny – even among those who say they prefer it. … What would happen if the media lifted the curtain on Clinton’s healthcare platform and introduced any level of scrutiny to her proposed improvements on the Affordable Care Act? They would find two categories of Clinton proposals: some that are so vague they’re difficult to evaluate, …

Bernie Sanders Will Make the Economy Great Again

Does Bernie Sanders’s economic program amount to pie-in-the-sky nonsense? The short answer is no. All of his major proposals are grounded in solid economic reasoning and evidence. But that hasn’t stopped a major swath of leading liberal economists and commentators to insist otherwise. Paul Krugman has led these attacks from his New York Times perch, charging repeatedly that Sanders makes “outlandish economic claims,” embraces “deep voodoo” economics, is “not ready for prime time,” and so forth. A recent Washington Post article by columnist Steven Pearlstein cites several other liberal economists criticizing Sanders’s support for Scandinavian-style social democratic policies, concluding that his program “promises all the good …

Sanders Welcomes Clinton Agreement on New York Debate

MILWAUKEE – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday welcomed Hillary Clinton’s agreement to debate him in New York before the state’s April 19 primary election. “Let’s do it,” Sanders said on CNN. After her campaign opposed a New York debate for over a month, Clinton told reporters at a campaign stop in La Crosse, Wisconsin, that she was open to the idea of debating Sanders in Brooklyn. The Sanders campaign hailed the development as a victory for Democratic voters everywhere and for New York voters in particular. The Clinton campaign’s earlier position was that the April debate agreed upon by …

Maximum size for Arctic sea ice hits a new low

The ice at the top of the world has set a new wintertime low for the second straight year, scientists at NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center announced March 28. On March 24, Arctic sea ice grew to its largest extent for the year, reaching only a paltry 14.52 million square kilometers, slightly less than the 14.54 million square kilometers observed last year. That’s 1.12 million square kilometers smaller than the 1981 to 2010 average, a size difference that’s bigger than California and Texas combined. The new low resulted largely from unusually warm temperatures in the region, which …

House GOP Budget Gets 62 Percent of Budget Cuts From Low- and Moderate-Income Programs

The House Republican budget plan, which could come to the House floor in April, would prove especially harmful to low- and moderate-income families and individuals, cutting programs for such people by an unprecedented amount while taking a strikingly unbalanced approach to deficit reduction.  It also would be inconsistent with statements of Republican leaders like House Speaker Paul Ryan that reducing poverty is a top priority. Specifically, the plan, which the House Budget Committee approved on March 16, would cut programs for low- and moderate-income people by about $3.7 trillion over the next decade.  In 2026, it would cut such programs …

Clinton Special Interest Donors and Fundraisers Include NRA Lobbyists

BURLINGTON, Vt.— Despite promises to take on special interests, the Clinton campaign continues to accept millions in contributions from corporate interests for its campaign and its affiliated super PACs. The list of corporate interests include lobbyists for the National Rifle Association. As late as this month, the Clinton campaign advertised a March 21 fundraising event hosted by Jeff Forbes, who was a long-time lobbyist for the NRA. She has also received maxed out contributions from NRA lobbyists. “How can you claim to take on the gun lobby when the gun lobby is funding your campaign?” said Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign …

One week before voters here go to the polls, Sanders’ mid-morning rally on a workday drew nearly 3,770 supporters to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. Sanders Statement on Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association

APPLETON, Wis. – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday issued the following statement after a 4-4 split decision by the Supreme Court left in place a lower court ruling allowing unions representing government employees to collect fees from workers who choose not to join: “Today’s split decision underscores the need to confirm a Supreme Court nominee who will protect the constitutional rights of American workers to collectively bargain for fair wages and safe working conditions. “The extreme right wing is just one conservative Supreme Court justice away from dismantling the rights of public sector unions to organize and collectively bargain …

The Choice Is Not Between TPP or No Trade

The high-profile presidential primary revolt against decades of damaging American trade policy finally has forced the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) into mainstream media coverage. The usual free-trade-agreement cheerleading squad of chronic-job-offshoring corporations, Wall Street, agribusiness and their coterie of think tanks and pundits are unnerved. After spending billions in campaign contributions, lobbying and PR since the 1990s to enact our current trade policies, they want us to believe there is no alternative. In recent weeks, they have ginned up a PR campaign with two main themes: Critics of free trade agreements in general and the TPP in specific are protectionists who …
