“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its labourers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.” ― Dwight D. Eisenhower
One of the main driving forces that caused me to jump into supporting Bernie was that some friends of mine were just shipped off to Baghdad, Iraq. I don’t want them to suffer the sort of mental and physical toll that war tends to take on people. As far as I can tell, Bernie Sanders is the only Candidate I can trust to put an end to it. I’ve never actively supported any politician before… But I’ll support Bernie to support my buddies in the Army. I’m concerned for every single one of our men and women over in hostile territories. I will worry about them all until they day they return.
Bernie Sanders is the only candidate that has a proven record on not only keeping our men and women out of harms way, he’s the only one with a proven record of supporting them when they come home. Bernie has been the recipient of the VFW’s highest award for his fine work in supporting our warriors that have returned. I’m not aware of any other current candidate that has received the Veterans of Foreign Wars prestigious Congressional Award. Impressive, but that alone is not what tells me that Mr. Sanders has what it takes. Bernie’s record on keeping our finest Americans out of harms way is his voting record. Time and time again, he has continuously voted in his positions as a congressman, and then currently, as a United States Senator, No to the political elites’ demands to send our men and women off to fight a seemingly endless war.
As for the other leading presidential candidates? They all clearly have hawkish views on militarism. Hillary? Jeb? Rubio? Paul? Cruz? Trump? All warmongers as far as I’m concerned. Whether it be Hillary’s known attitudes towards battle, or the Republicans undying love of death and destruction, I can not in good conscience allow myself and others to be drawn into supporting such despicable behavior. They all have loathsome records and attitudes towards killing, and getting our American soldiers killed.
I, like most Americans, have grown sickened of seeing a never ending stream of videos and pictures of our fighting men and women coming home mangled, physically AND mentally. We all salute them. But, why do we allow this? Why do we mindlessly chat slogans such as “Support our Troops.” in the face of such horrendous wounds without so much as a thought. Why not support our wounded and unwounded warriors alike by not sending them into battle needlessly? This has to end, it has to end now.
In my previous capacity as an employee for a VA contractor that digitized paper veterans claims for the Veterans Administration, I’ve seen first hand what war does to people. The horrible scars and the horrible mental toll it takes on people is horrendous, It’s not pretty. It was a non-stop parade of homelessness, depression, life-long injuries with life-long pain all playing out before my eyes. It got to the point I just couldn’t take it any more. Even the sight of what our troops have had to deal with has left me with mental scars that I don’t believe will ever heal. I don’t even want to imagine what some have had to deal with. It would be too overwhelming.
We must all say no to War, and no to the war mongers. Please, consider voting for Bernie Sanders. Let’s all show REAL support for our troops by putting a man into the White House that will say no to the military industrial complex, no to the war profiteers, and no to the political elites that are hell-bent on death and destruction. A vote for Bernie Sanders, put a stop to these endless wars.
